Trying to Right the Wrong

Man´s inhumanity to man will never cease to shock and sicken me.

On July 6, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces shelled Srebrenica and attacked Dutch-manned UN observation posts, which were located in "the safe area." On about July 12, Bosnian Serb military personnel arrived at the UN military compound, separated the men and boys from the women and girls, and detained the males. Between July 11 and July 18, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces killed thousands of Bosnian Muslim men and boys.

As the tenth anniversary of the massacres at Srebrenica approaches (July 11, 1995), impunity for perpetrators of these human rights violations still continues. Srebrenica is also a name for a post-traumatic syndrome displayed by women, children and old people who, since July 1995, have not heard of their loved ones. Information on the fate of the men and boys who "disappeared" has not been made public and although some perpetrators have been prosecuted at the International Criminal Tribunal (ICTY), indicted suspects including Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic are still free.
